Having “things” vs having “time”

I was reading a book called An Abundance of Less when something stood out to me. The protagonist of a story mentioned that she wished she had more time then goes on to mention that more people wish they had more things, than more time.

It made me stop for a moment, but it makes perfect sense in the context of whatever I have been watching on YouTube or reading about minimalism: so if you want more things then you need more money, and you busy yourself with work to buy more things, hence you don’t have much time and spend most of your waking hours rushing about.

Having more things also means having to take good care of those things, which is also why minimalists say they feel “lighter” when they start their journey by decluttering. The things you own really take up some space in the back of your mind, and somehow it makes you feel tired when you are surrounded by all the many things you own.

It struck me as a good rule of thinking to follow: to wish to have more time, instead of to wish to have more things.

Today

I spent the whole of today, a Sunday, doing some wholesome and productive stuff. I lifted weights, ran on the elliptical machine and read some portion of a book on my new Kindle.

I didn’t want to feel like a wasted my off day, since I am currently on a six day work week job. The job is not very tiring but scary because I have to learn how to be a dental assistant. When I observe my colleagues, I notice they are very quick in the treatment room and the dentist doesn’t have to do much to get them doing all the right stuff. I am afraid I cannot be as proficient.

Osim uSqueez 2

Bought that on impulse, well, not really since I wanted one for a long time.

Just that it’s like an impulse buy because now I’m very broke till end of April. Because the government says I must die die pay property tax by 30 Mar.

The impetus was because I’m effectively in a retail job and my soles hurt from being on my feet for the whole day.

The problem now is that Osim is still processing the order. They are so slow.

Just now after work

I saw a senior high school white kid in white polo t shirt cycling.

It made me pause because he reminded me of the feeling I had watching the Singapore American School guys walking home. They also wore white polo t shirts.

They weren’t that cute but they looked reliable.

I don’t think most review public hospital C class wards, but…

I liked Ng Teng Fong Hospital. It’s of course, fairly new.

The layout of the beds are slightly different from older hospitals.

I don’t really want to say anymore because CNY is not a nice time to be warded and yet, it was pleasant enough for me to be thankful I chose Ng Teng Fong Hospital.

When I had to see a doctor during CNY, my mother had wanted me to go to Alexandra Hospital. I was running a high fever and wondering about the long bus ride…., so I chose Ng Teng Fong.

Smart cities and privacy?

I wonder what the Dutch would say and how they would do it.

And then I’m certain some human rights lawyers will say smart cities can make it difficult for justice because it is more difficult to appeal if they digitize everything.

It makes me want to chit chat with a professor. I do like meeting very knowledgeable people.

Yay to free thermometers

Last night it was 39.3°C, so it must have been higher when the fever first struck. now I have a headache as well.

I have always wondered if doctors like tech, because whenever I see a doctor I get jealous they have such high tech equipment I can’t have at home.
